Today, over 95% of all alcohol and drug treatment centers in the United States are based on the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. They focus their efforts and energies on taking their clients to 12 Step meetings and on educating them about the process of the 12 Steps. Many 12 Steps programs require their clients to complete the first 3 to 5 steps before leaving treatment. There are several issues with the 12 steps having so much control over the drug alcohol treatment industry. First of all, the 12 steps are an aftercare program, meaning they all about keeping people clean and sober. Even they admit they are there to "keep people sober, not get people sober".
